As decentralized social communities continue to rise, platform stability and cybersecurity risks have once again come under scrutiny. Recently, the well-known decentralized social platform Bluesky suffered a large-scale distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, resulting in service disruptions and abnormal user experiences. In response, SkyCloud Tengyun Computing noted that even with a decentralized architecture, platforms still need to establish comprehensive traffic governance and multi-layered protection mechanisms when facing increasingly complex traffic-based attacks.


Bluesky Hit by DDoS Attack, Services Experience Intermittent Outages

Recently, the emerging social platform Bluesky reportedly experienced large-scale service abnormalities. According to foreign media reports, the platform has been under a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack since the evening of April 15, Eastern Time, causing intermittent outages in services such as feeds, notifications, post threads, and search functions.

The Bluesky operations team stated that this was a “sophisticated DDoS attack,” in which a large amount of abnormal traffic flooded the system, resulting in excessive system load and affecting service stability. Officials also stated that there are currently no signs of unauthorized access to any user data.

Since the attack began on the evening of April 15, it has continued for more than a day. During this period, Bluesky experienced multiple instances of service instability, with users encountering issues at different times such as slow page loading, error messages, or temporary unavailability of certain features. The company continued to provide updates through its status page and social channels, but some status services were even temporarily unable to display properly, indicating that the attack had caused a certain level of impact on the overall infrastructure.


Bluesky: An Emerging Representative of Decentralized Social Networking

Bluesky is one of the social platforms that has rapidly emerged in recent years. Originally initiated by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, it focuses on the concept of a “decentralized social network” and adopts the “AT Protocol” architecture, allowing users to own control over their data and customize algorithmic feeds. Its goal is to build an open social network controlled by the public and not monopolized by a single entity.

However, this incident also shows that even though Bluesky adopts a decentralized architecture and emphasizes data portability and an open ecosystem—allowing users to freely migrate between different services—its main entry services or key nodes may still become targets of attack.


Expanding Impact Tests User Experience and Platform Competitiveness

From actual usage conditions, this attack caused multiple abnormalities, including popular feed pages displaying messages such as “Traffic is too high, temporarily unavailable,” system errors such as “Rate Limit Exceeded,” and personal pages requiring multiple refreshes before loading properly.

In addition to functional disruptions, this incident also indirectly affected user behavior. Some independent communities built on the same protocol were not affected and instead saw short-term user migration and increased registration demand, showing that in the competition among social platforms, “service stability” remains a key factor affecting user retention and growth.


DDoS Attacks Continue to Evolve, with Social Platforms Becoming Emerging Targets

SkyCloud Tengyun Computing pointed out that DDoS attacks mainly overwhelm services with large amounts of malicious traffic, exhausting system resources and thereby affecting the experience of legitimate users. Although such attacks typically do not involve system intrusion or data theft, their impact on service availability and brand trust cannot be ignored.

Further observation of industry trends shows that in recent years, DDoS attack targets are no longer limited to financial institutions or large enterprises. Social platforms, content services, and digital applications are also gradually becoming high-risk targets. With the growing prevalence of AI automation tools and bot traffic, attack behavior is becoming more similar to that of real users, significantly increasing the difficulty of defense.


Multi-Layered Protection and Traffic Governance Become Key Foundational Capabilities

Regarding this incident, SkyCloud Tengyun Computing stated that when facing modern DDoS attacks, enterprises can no longer effectively respond to diverse attack patterns by relying on a single protection mechanism alone. It is recommended to establish a multi-layered protection and traffic governance architecture, including:

  • Distributing traffic pressure through CDN edge nodes

  • Establishing L3/L4 traffic scrubbing mechanisms to block abnormal packets

  • Introducing application-layer (L7) behavior analysis and bot identification

  • Combining real-time traffic monitoring with automated defense strategies

SkyCloud Tengyun Computing emphasized that in an environment where AI traffic and automated attacks continue to grow, “traffic as risk” has become a core issue that enterprises cannot afford to ignore. Only by balancing performance, stability, and security can digital services continue to operate reliably under various attack scenarios.
