Recently, international media reports indicated that Uyghur-related media websites have recently been targeted by large-scale Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, causing prolonged website outages. The incident has been reported to relevant U.S. cybersecurity authorities, highlighting the ongoing and increasing risk of cyberattacks against platforms covering specific topics.

The targeted site, Uyghur Post, provides news on Uyghur issues, human rights, and international affairs. It is part of the overseas Uyghur media network and has long focused on related ethnic and political topics. Due to the nature of its content and sensitivity of its coverage, such websites are often more likely to become targets of cyberattacks and information warfare.


High-Volume Traffic Attacks Cause Service Disruptions

According to international media and publicly available technical data, the attacks have been ongoing since early March. Daily requests to the website surged to nearly 190 million, far exceeding normal capacity, resulting in repeated service interruptions and even complete connection failures. These attacks are typical high-volume DDoS attacks, flooding the target website with massive abnormal requests in a short period, leading to service paralysis.

Technical examinations of the incident indicate that the attackers’ identities and exact sources have not yet been fully confirmed. However, traffic analysis suggests that some of the network infrastructure may be linked to major Chinese tech resources. The incident has also been formally reported to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Cyber Crime Division and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

Some cybersecurity experts analyzing the incident noted that the scale, coordination, and infrastructure usage of the attacks resemble previously observed highly coordinated attack patterns. Technical response teams also believe this is not a random isolated incident but a sustained and purpose-driven action. Relevant organizations and media suggest that the attacks may be related to geopolitical tensions and pressure over specific topics.


Rising Geopolitical Risks and Expanding DDoS Targets

SkyCloud highlights that while such attacks were previously concentrated on media, government agencies, or controversial-topic websites, they have in recent years noticeably spread to general enterprise digital services. As global geopolitical situations evolve, cyberattacks have become an important means of extending conflicts. Taiwan, as a highly digitalized market in a strategic location, also faces potential risks, particularly for news and content platforms, high-traffic or high-exposure websites, and online platforms providing critical digital services.

SkyCloud notes that Taiwan has previously experienced cases where government and corporate websites were targeted by large-scale DDoS attacks, affecting service availability. These incidents demonstrate that any externally-facing website or platform can become a target, with the main differences being the attack’s scale, method, and motive.


Implementing Multi-Layer Defense to Reduce Service Disruption Risks

To face increasingly frequent and escalating attacks, SkyCloud recommends enterprises deploy multi-layer defense architectures in advance, including:

  • Distributing traffic load through CDN nodes to reduce the risk of single-point overload

  • Real-time traffic scrubbing and anomaly detection to quickly filter malicious traffic

  • WAF (Web Application Firewall) to block application-layer attacks, such as SQL injection and cross-site attacks

  • Automated defense mechanisms to quickly trigger mitigation strategies during an attack

  • Traffic monitoring and alert systems to track anomalies and security events in real-time

SkyCloud points out that by integrating CDN, Anti-DDoS, and WAF protection mechanisms, enterprises can more rapidly divert traffic, block malicious requests, and maintain service continuity during attacks, reducing operational impact from website downtime.


Cybersecurity as a Fundamental Requirement for Business Operations

SkyCloud emphasizes that DDoS attacks have evolved from occasional incidents to a constant risk that enterprises must face. As digital services and online business become core to operations, the availability, stability, and security of websites and applications directly impact brand trust, customer experience, and revenue performance.

SkyCloud states: “Enterprises need not only to defend against attacks but also to establish comprehensive cybersecurity resilience strategies to ensure critical services remain operational under high traffic or malicious attacks.” They also recommend planning a holistic approach covering multi-layer defense, traffic monitoring, WAF, and automated mitigation, making cybersecurity resilience a fundamental component of modern digital operations.
